In the Studio

Hello,

Here’s some photographic evidence (complements of Lesley Marino) that we have officially started work on the next PAPERMAPS album. Johnny, Betty and myself began work on the basic tracks for about six songs at 6 Nassau (Toronto) with engineer David MacKinnon. It was a real pleasure working with Dave at his awesome facility. We will continue work at our own facility (facilities) in the coming weeks and months. More updates to follow!

Cheers!

Papermaps at NXNE !

Hello!

It’s been a while since I’ve logged in – we’ve been super busy creating our new studio space in a top secret location where Papermaps (and some friends) will be creating a majority of our music. I promise some pictures in the near future.  Meanwhile…

We’ve got a couple of hometown show announcements:

First, a chance to see our classic lineup, again:

Friday May 25th – EL MOCAMBO with Mercy Now, Goodnight Sunrise, Rulers of the Moon
We are very happy to be supporting our friends Goodnight Sunrise at this excellent TWM Presents event.  Please note:  because Betty Dimo will be away on vacation in some exotic locale, we will be reprising our classic lineup with Todd on bass guitar duty. This means this set will be heavy on the “classic” material.  Our set time:  10:45 / Doors at 9 / $7

Second:

Thursday June 14th – Rancho Relaxo – TWM Presents NXNE
Here’s what Dan over at TwoWayMonologues had to say about us:

“Papermaps are Toronto’s best band, but they are criminally underrated as so many of Toronto’s show-going music scene are busy chasing after the next hip thing.  Nationally, and even internationally, people are taking notice in a big way about just how great this band is.  Sooner or later Toronto is going to do the same.  If you are going to see one set for NXNE, this should probably be it.”

Thanks Dan!

Our set: 11PM Sharp! $10 at the door.  http://nxne.com/tickets/

Friday June 15th – The Football Factory – SonaBLAST NXNE Party!

Our first ever “open air” concert! The Football Factory 164 Bathurst Street  just south of Queen St.  Come party with us on the Patio!

That’s all for now folks!

Papermaps in the Studio 2

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!

Here are some pics from Session Day 2 at our HQ, Chemical Sound.  It was keyboards galore!  We stayed inside the control room where it’s warm.  Jay helped out with the engineering. Thanks to Wendy for most of these photos!  Apologies for the lack of exposure, we like the dark.

We did some group vocals after this and were too busy to snap pictures.  Session Day 3 was mostly guitars.   I didn’t snap any photos of my guitar setup, but it was very similar to my earlier accounts of that (see it here).  Session Day 4 was mostly my vocals.  We tend to work slowly on small batches of songs, usually 2 to 3 at a time, so these photos represent a small portion of our work.  We are happy to share them with you when we can!

Papermaps in the Studio

Hi,
Here’s some photographic proof that we have begun work on our second album. These are shots taken by Jay Sad of “Session Day 1″  at Vespa Studios.  Betty, Bobby and myself recorded the bed tracks for 3 new songs. Pictures from our Chemical Sound sessions are forthcoming. To be fair, dear reader, it takes months for us to record an album because we do it in short song-spurts so expect delays between posts … but it’s nice to be finally off and running! :)

I’ll be posting more studio photos in the future.

Our Southern Souls Session

We had the pleasure of doing a Southern Souls session with Mitch Fillion (video) and Julie Lavelle (photos). The session was filmed at my studio, Chemical Sound. We did 3 performances direct to analog tape running at slow speed (15 inches per second). What you hear in these videos are raw live performances (no post editing or overdubs) with really great sound thanks to the studio equipment and  environment and especially Jay Sadlowski (who engineered the session and also co-owns the studio). I (Dean) mixed the final results from analogue tape into computer — doing the regular sound enhancements I would normally do (i.e. adding reverbs/delays/eq and thickening sounds).   Mitch filmed these performances in HD, doing single shot takes (no edits).  The lighting in the studio is low (especially at night) but Mitch did a beautiful job. A big thanks to Mitch for doing this, Julie for the photos and Jay for his help! Please enjoy!
