Year End List

Hi,
The end of 2010 is in sight and everybody seems to be posting their “best of” lists. Well, although I consider myself a full-fledged musician, I am merely a budding music critic.  Instead of proclaiming what I think are the best albums of 2010, I’m going to make a list of the (vinyl) records I actually purchased in 2010 in no particular order. Most of these made up a significant portion of my soundtrack for 2010 (and some didn’t at all):

Lisbon — The Walkmen
Swim — Caribou
Frankie and the Outs — Frankie and the Outs
The Suburbs — Arcade Fire
Penny Sparkle — Blonde Redhead
Brothers — The Black Keys
Say It — Born Ruffians
Rough Travel for a Rare Thing — Bill Callahan
East General — The Bitters
Malaikat dan Singa — Arrington de Dionyso
EXPO 86 — Wolf Parade

Honourable Mention:
The Pains of Being Pure at Heart
— The Pains of Being Pure at Heart (released in 2009)

Have a Happy Holiday Season and New Year’s Celebration,

Guitars, Guitars, Guitars

I’m having fun finishing this last tune.  After the “beds” I did some guitar overdubs, mostly doubling parts that are already on the beds.  Hey Nerd, want to know how I mic my amp?  Here it is:  3 mics:  Centre left and right.   Draw your own conclusions . . .

A U87 in front (centre) of an AC30 guitar amp.

Later we sang some gang vocals using the two far mics . . .

My phone camera is not the best . . .

I’m going into the studio today to record guitars on top of guitars and some vocals.  Todd and Wendy are joining me later tonight to do bass and keys (respectively) and then some fun gang vocal shouts.  All this equals one last song for the PAPERMAPS album.

More Recording, Shows & CMW 2011

Hi,

Happy Winter Holidays! I hope to have more news before the end of the Holiday Season, but I felt like posting tonight . . .

We’ve been busy in the studio these last few days, capturing noises — one last song to add to our forthcoming record. We’ve been talking to a record label (I won’t name names just yet) and it looks like we have a home for our Spring 2011 release! In the meantime we will be releasing a limited edition 7-inch (with download) on January 11 and will be appearing live January 20th at the El Mocambo (along with our cousin band, Tin Star Orphans and the excellent Rival Boys) with record boxes in tow!

In other news, we’ve been officially invited to participate in Canadian Music Fest 2011 (March 9-13th). I’m not sure quite when/where yet, so keep an eye out for us in the listings. Here’s our official band page on the CMF website:
